Using APRS for ham radio emergency communications

This is a short video recorded during a brief lunch break. I was curious to see how a software application I’m working on within my company would work with APRS especially as emergency response.

To communicate with the software I sent data packets from APRS radio to an iGate, then to SMSGTE (which is a APRS to SMS gateway) which then routed the message through the internet to the software and back through this chain to the radio.

My hope with this test was to see if the software could work in this chain and possibly provide a semi automated solution to managing regular data and communications handling with operators who are offline.

I will soon be able to provide more detail about the software once we have performed more trials in it’s original setting which is clinical communication.

I’m a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My YouTube channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.
